Japanese Katana Swords
Described as the soul of the samurai, the katana sword was the samurai's weapon of choice from 1400 A.D. until 1876 when the samurai disappeared as a social class.
With its slightly curved single edged steel blade the katana sword was a lethal weapon in the hands of a skilled samurai. Naturally it was designed with the sole purpose of cutting, but it was just as good at stabbing thanks to the super sharp point found on the end of every katana.
Being the primary weapon of a samurai, it commanded respect from both the samurai himself and Japanese society; this was reflected in how a samurai carried the katana and the quick death that awaited a non samurai for carrying a katana sword.
The samurai perfected their use of the katana in martial arts schools throughout Japan, but perhaps the holy grail was mastering the art of daishõ, the ability of a samurai to duel with both the katana and the wakizashi sword.
Today nearly all katana swords are manufactured from steel with a wide choice of steel blends available, each with their own pro's and con's and associated cost. The quality of katana sword can be determined by checking how much the blade bends when hit (resistance), how well the blade returns to its original shape (elasticity) and endurance.
